If you’re reading this, you probably know about “Angry Zombie Ninja Cats” from OnekSoft Games. But where did the name come from? Is it simply a mashup of popular terms on the Internet?

In a way, yes. But that’s not the whole story. Note that there is no “Pirate” or “Avatar” or “Massage” in its name.

As @OtakuDante pointed out in his review,

“It’s a platformer titled “Angry Zombie Ninja Cats”, and all of the words within the game’s name definitely have something to do with it.”

Or as @IndieGamerChick pointed out in her review:

“… one of the most blatant attempts at a quirky name dreamed up since Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills… First zombies, then ninjas, and now cats?  And they’re all angry? Why you sly little [CENSORED]“

Here’s the full story behind the title:

•  Ninjas: Why ninjas? The game was inspired by an idea I had when I was a little kid in a Third-World country. I made a “paper game” called Ninja Warriors, which had human ninjas with shurikins, swords, and projectile explosives. The protagonist would have to defeat other human ninjas through platforms and levels. I made over a 100 of these paper games, where the fixed background was inked in, and moveable “sprites” were drawn in pencil. All moves and attacks were accomplished by flicking the pencil, and letting it slide along the surface.
• Cats: Why cats? We had countless cats while growing up, so my family and I always loved cats. I recognize the popularity of cats on the Internet, so I decided to make the characters into anthropomorphic ninja cats.
• Zombies: Why zombies? When I started the project, I already knew about the XNA Platformer Starter Kit, since I had tried it out a few years ago, when it was first released. I felt that the PSK was a good starting point, and the enemies were already zombie-like, so I decided to make the enemies Zombie Ninja Cats.
• Angry: Why are they angry? While using the PSK, I knew that I had to replace all original content and alter the behavior of in-game characters. I wanted the the enemies to run faster towards the main character if the good ninja cat fell within their sights. Hence, they are angry.

Angry. Zombie. Ninja. Cats.

So, you’ve found the website for Angry Zombie Ninja Cats for Xbox 360…

… but where can you find it on Xbox Live Marketplace?

Main Menu:

1. click Start New Game to get started
2. choose Load Game to restore a saved game
3. go to Options from the Main Menu
4. in Options, go to Controls to see the control scheme
5. trial version also has an option to Unlock Full Game

Powerups and Zombies:

1. for close combat, use Y for sword attack at any time
2. you will have 0 shurikins at the beginning of each level
3. pick up shurikin powerups by touching them, X to throw them
4. pick up green diamonds to get points
5. super-ninja powerup allows you to double-jump and also destroy zombies on touching
6. shoot shurikins to kill zombies from afar
7. shurikins can kill multiple zombies but will be stopped by solid blocks
8. zombies who see you up close will get ANGRY and charge you

Losing Lives:

1. touching a zombie turns you into a zombie, you lose a life,
2. falling into hole or green-slime fire pit put makes you lose a life (zombified!)
3. if you lose a life, you get put back at beginning of level
4. shurikin count and level points remains…
5. exception: if you lose your 3rd (last) life, your shurikin count and current level points get reset to 0

Completing levels and Saving Progress:

1. the background color indicates the time of day from dawn-through-afternoon-to-evening
2. collect all gems before running towards the exit portal
3. follow gem trails to figure out the best path
4. follow vertical trail of gems to determine safe spots to fall on
5. reach the glowing portal at the end of each level to complete a level
6. press Start to pause in-game at any time
7. from the Pause menu, save your “completed” progress

Save/Load Explained with an example:

1. let’s say you make it to Level 3 (but didn’t reach the exit portal)
2. click Start to pause, then Save Completed Progress
3. Save File will be created/updated with info that you completed Level 2
4. from the Main Menu, click Options, then Load Game
5. loading saved game will put you into the beginning of Level 3
6. you can’t save in the very first level, since you haven’t completed any levels yet
7. the Save feature is also disabled in the Trial mode
